Trek XI For Christmas ’08

February 28, 2007

I’m not really sure how to feel about this. The way the Star Trek franchise has been handled the last 5-10 years makes me sad; Voyager, Enterprise, the last two movies (seriously, you can fly the Enterprise with a joystick?) have all been disappointments – not bad, just not very uneven.

J.J. Abrams is directing? Even though Lost seem to have, since the end of the first season, settled into a slow boat to nowhere, J.J. Abrams being attatched to this is a positive. They are going to do a prequel to the original series? Great, everyone loves nostalgia. This way you also don’t have to deal with the serious retcon needed after Voyager destroyed all hope for the ‘future’ of the time line.

XI? Wait, that’s an odd number.. not a promising sign..

A young version of Kirk, Spock and the gang? Meh.. Matt Damon as Kirk? Gah..

As much as I love the IP, I’ve just been beaten down to the point that I don’t have the energy to get excited about this. Will I run out with all the other nerds to see this one? Sure. Paramount will get my ticket money, and it seems that that is all they are concerned with.
